Old People Who Miss Appointments In Order To Spend... →
are called “retirees”, they are not called “U.S. Senators.”  Senator Manchin?  You receive hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to do one thing: vote.  If you thought your grandkids were more important than this job (which occasionally requires weekend work), you shouldn’t have moved heaven and earth to get this job.  (Spending time with his grandkids is Story 2.0...

Nick Saban "Cautions" Juniors?? →
More like, Nick Saban acts (typically) in own self-interest and discourages eligible players from going to the NFL.  On one hand, I can imagine other coaches saying this.  On the other, that the first coach I’ve heard about publicly is Nick Saban is about as surprising as the weather forecast.  I think I still have some latent Saban hate over the whole Dolphins thing.  What a putz.

Finding the Best Chicago Pizza in San Francisco →
Like the scientific approach to best Chicago pizza in SF. shamurai: Chicago prefers the strong; it’s architecture, winter cold, summer heat, and, most of all, the flavors. As a Chicago expat living in San Francisco, I was excited to see a Chicago style pizza joint open in my sleepy neighborhood. When I shared the news about Patxi’s new Noe Valley location with…

Omnibus Fail →
I’ve been about to publish politically-themed posts a bunch of times this week and each time, I’d save the post as draft only to have it overtaken by events.  So, here goes. The linked piece describes how the appropriations bill blew up in the Senate last night.  Put simply, it was a spending bill larded up with earmarks.  Harry Reid figured it would still pass because a lot of the...

Tax Deal →
I’ve been blogging for some while that the Democrats should have enacted their version of tax reform when they had the chance.  President Obama ducked this question in his press conference yesterday when someone asked him whether he regretted not getting a tax package up sooner.  I say it’s all about priorities.  I guess that Democrats felt (as I have at times) that the tax issue...

A Defining Moment →
David Kurtz’s reaction (linked) to the Presidential presser today was an interesting one.  And I’m pretty sure I agree.  In sum, he thinks the President sent a definitive message to the dreamy liberals out there who have supported him - I may share many of your objectives, but I am a pragmatist and you had better get comfortable with that.  Read Kurtz in full. Here’s the video: ...

Gates on Wikileaks →
This guy makes far too much sense to be allowed to retire.  Not panic?  To argue (as sensible Republicans did throughout the Reagan and Bush I eras) that nations deal with us because it’s in their interest to do so but only to the extent that it’s in their interest to do so?  We could use a lot more of this sort of thinking.

GOP To Take Ball and Go Home Unless Tax Cuts... →
Nice bipartisanship.  This is just the first shot in what’s going to be a barrage of “bipartisanship means adopting our positions without compromise.”  Wait until the GOP actually has their House majority next month.  Some might look at this and say “unemployment insurance goes by the wayside until tax cuts are passed?”  That’s precisely what Senator Scott Brown...
